Welcome Message

Dear Parents / Carers / Friends,

I am pleased to welcome you to Merryfields Community Special School.  We currently provide education for approximately 100 pupils aged 2 to 11 years. We are a generic special school which means we can meet the needs of any pupil whose needs cannot be met in mainstream education.

Merryfields is an attractive, purpose-built and welcoming school set in pleasant grounds within the residential area of Wolstanton, a mile away from Newcastle town centre. Our work with pupils is enhanced by good resources and great care has been given to the security of the site to ensure that pupils are safe.

The successful, experienced and committed staff work hard to maintain a friendly, cooperative and industrious atmosphere and to provide a wide range of balanced learning experiences for every pupil, whatever his or her special need may be.

Our most recent OFSTED (Office for Standards in Education) inspection in March 2011 reported that “Merryfields is a good school, it is a joyful place where pupils thrive as learners and as growing young people”. The key strength of the school is the pastoral care offered to pupils and their families.

We believe very strongly that we can only achieve the best for your child by close cooperation between home and school. There are formal and informal opportunities to work with our staff to encourage and support your child. We know that, as parents, you know your child best, but also that we have knowledge, expertise and experience which will ensure progress. We ask that you commit yourselves to working closely with us throughout your child’s school career.

The aim of our school is for your child to make maximum progress in all areas of his or her life; socially, emotionally, academically, physically and morally. Communication skills and progress in independence have high priority.

If your child is to attend Merryfields School, we look forward to welcoming you and your child to the Merryfields “family” and to working in partnership with you to provide a stimulating and exciting environment where all children are happy and able to achieve.

Yours sincerely,

Sarah Poyner
Headteacher
